001: Pebble from Pāvilosta

This isn’t the first pebble in the Sea Library collection, yet I would love to start cataloging them with this one that I found just yesterday by the open Baltic Sea in Pāvilosta. We were about to leave this beautiful port town where we celebrated the New Year’s Eve, when I walked with Nemo down to the beach to say bye to the open sea (before we return to the gulf). I looked for a pebble to take home with me and found my first ever pebble with a hole in it. Three holes, actually! (And one super small.) In many mythologies, they are amulets of luck and have strong magical properties.

This find reminded me to re-read Clarence Ellis “The Pebbles on the Beach” which was first published 1954 but republished in 2018 by Faber & Faber in a beautiful design. Have you read it? You can borrow the book from the Sea Library.
