644: Charles Foster: A Little Brown Sea

This is a book about what it is possible to know: about uncertainty and how to deal with uncertainty. It was written, as all my books were written, for me – but there are many who share my concerns. There is a universal sense of ontological queasiness. We do not feel at home in the world because we do not know what the world is like. There are ways of getting to know it better, and therefore ways of inhabiting it more intimately. This book explores those ways. It recruits non-human voices to tell the story.

“There were plenty of persons in the sea, but their personality never lent personality to the sea itself. .. the sea is never, ever a person.”
