004 :: Postcard from Wales

In September 2022, Rachel Davies from Cardiff, Wales, sent a gift to the Sea Library: a copy of Caryl Lewis’ book “Drift” (2022), a bookmark and this lovely postcard. It has a view of Tenby, a walled seaside town in Pembrokeshire, Wales. “I’m sending you a copy of “Drift” so you have a piece of fiction from Wales in the Sea Library,” Rachel writes. “It’s a tender love with a little folklore mixed in with modern life. We have a saying in Welsh called ‘hiraeth’. There’s no direct translation, but it’s a type of homesickness or longing Welsh people feel when they’re away for too long. Nefyn, the main character at this book, feels that way when she’s away from the sea.” I also love how she greets and says goodbye in Welsh! Thank you, Rachel.
